Meet Paul
Hi, I’m Paul Scawn. I have run Abode House Clearances since 2004.
I have been through it all; moving house and losing my parents. I was fortunate enough to not have to dispose of their items immediately.
But in time I realised that my children won’t want all of it. And so I held onto some special pieces and let the rest go.
If you are faced with clearing out the home of your parents or relatives, my advice is to take out a few things that mean the most to you and let the rest go.
It’s the memories that matter, not the material things. And you can always take photos of furniture to keep a record of the items.
Our Experiences
Over the years, we’ve uncovered some truly remarkable and unusual items—pieces of social history, old photographs, and artifacts that tell stories from the past.
A postcard, a missing-in-action letter, or news of a prisoner of war—each one holds deep personal meaning for someone. Preserving these items isn’t just about documentation; it’s about keeping their stories alive.
For us, it’s never been about the money. It’s about ensuring these pieces don’t go to waste, so future generations can decide their value in 30 years’ time.
Take, for example, an old 300-year-old piano. It wasn’t worth much in monetary terms, but it had beautifully crafted front legs—pieces of history in themselves. Instead of discarding it, we carefully removed those legs and repurposed them into new furniture. These items, rich with patina and history, hold a soul of their own—especially in the aged oak that has witnessed centuries of life.
